A huge congratulations to Tennyson Grade 7 student, Linna, who has been selected to go to the 2024 BC Winter Games in speed skating as part of the Zone 5 Vancouver Coastal Region team!
Based on racing times from the past year, she qualified as one of the two fastest female speed skaters aged 12-13 in our region. The BC Winter Games is only held every 2 years for up and coming athletes aged 12-13 in a variety of winter sports. It's a true achievement to be selected! We hope Tennyson can cheer her on when she competes on February 21-25! Here's the full list of BC Winter Games team selections. I have a Masters in Education in Second language learning from SFU and a French Immersion specialization from UBC (B.Ed. in French Immersion). I have graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree at McGill University in Montreal, where I specialized in Linguistics and Education. Furthermore, I have completed my Masters' degree in Education, specializing in Second Language Acquisition at Simon Fraser University. I have a Bachelor of Education from UBC specializing in French Immersion. I have also lived in France for a few months and in Quebec for five years. Please send me an email, if you are interested and wanted to discuss further. Best regards, Ioana tatar.ioana@yahoo.ca Vancouver School Board Superintendent Helen McGregor recently circulated a letter and resource guide to share information about Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI)-inclusive education.
Download the resources "SOGI-inclusive education is part of a larger educational approach that includes various aspects of identity and inclusion. Its main objective is to promote respect and understanding while reducing incidents of violence and discrimination against students and community members who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+. "SOGI-inclusive education is built into the BC Curriculum. It lines up with our ongoing efforts to build and grow an inclusive environment, complementing our work in equity, including racial equity, Indigenous equity and the inclusion of diverse abilities and needs in schools. This approach ensures that students learn and develop a deep appreciation for the diverse individuals who shape and enrich our society." The Vancouver Speed Skating Club has room in our beginner group if you and/or your child are interested in learning to speed skate!
It's a fantastic sport with a supportive and amazing community. It brings together all ages and genders in pursuit of fast, fun times on the ice. We train at Kitsilano Rink twice a week, with one additional dryland session weekly. Tennyson students Linnea (Grade 7) and Tavi (Grade 1) are both in the club and they train in the same group - aka only one drop-off! If you have any questions, please ask at president@vancouverspeedskating.com! Otherwise you're encouraged to sign up for the One Month Trial program and come check it out. Fees include skate rentals! Stop by for some Halloween treats and show your support for Tennyson mum, Nina, as she opens the doors of her new business venture, Petit Foret, a cafe that will focus more on books, a few small gifts and story time.
