The following post was written by Vice Principal: Regina Vosahlo and originally posted on the VSB's Lord Tennyson Elementary School web page. Check it regularly for school news. The students of all ages had an excellent opportunity to train and to prepare for cross-country running meets this year. Under the experienced leadership of our long-time coach, Chris Fuoco, the students practiced diligently three times a week and honed their running technique. This was Chris' 11th and final coaching cross-country season at Tennyson! The students then participated in three mini-meets which culminated in the Final District Meet at Trout Lake. Our runners demonstrated awesome sportsmanship, enthusiasm and Tennyson Spirit! This all would not be possible without our sponsor teachers and parents who worked hard to organize everyone for the meets: Mme Renée, Mme Taillefer, M. Thomas, Jaqueline Crummey and Radha Reddy. Bravo, Tennyson tigres! We would like to recognize the Tennyson Tiger's efforts and accomplishments with a celebration on Monday, October 22 at 10:30 am at recess in the library. Pizza will be served for all students as well as cake to celebrate the 11 seasons of coaching that Chris has done with the team. All cross-country participants and staff/parents involved are welcome to this event, please mark it in your calendar! Here are some of the Tennyson Runners who placed! The Halloween Howl Coordination Team is super excited for this year’s Halloween Howl! Get your best costume ideas going and come and HOWL with us!!! All of your favourite rooms are back and will be bigger and better than ever!
Respectfully seeking volunteers... We need YOU to sign up to make this volunteer-run event happen! The sign-up sheets still have LOTS of empty spaces, especially for the second shift of the activities on the night of the howl. Here are the sign up sheet! Thursday afternoon and evening set-up 5:30 – 9:00 pm Friday afternoon set-up 3:00-6:15 pm Friday Night - Howl Night 6:15-7:45 pm AND 7:45-9:15 pm Saturday break down and clean up 9:30 am – 3:00 pm We also need LOTS of cake makers/buyers for the Cake Walk and this is where you can let your (or your child’s) baking and decorating creativity run wild!!! Pumpkin Carving Costume Contest information will be forthcoming next week in a notice that will be sent home. And a special request from the How Coordinators... We still need Room Heads for the Fortune Teller and Batty Bingo Rooms. As a Room Head you lead a team of volunteers to set up the room in the afternoon on the day of the Howl. If you are also able to work the first shift on Howl Night, that would be ideal, but not required. Other parent volunteers can sign up to work the shifts. You will be emailed information and given a duotang with information about how to set-up the room. Photos included. Please email the [email protected] if you can lead one of these rooms. We are kindly asking parents to consider signing up to volunteer for their division tasks first and foremost. In so doing, we hope to cover all of the volunteer shifts needed. However, if you have a particular skill or a burning desire to be volunteering elsewhere, WE WELCOME YOU to do so and do not want you to feel constrained to your division assignment. Every room has something just a little bit different than the others, so please choose to assist where you feel the most comfortable! It REALLY takes a village to make this event happen. We are so grateful to the Tennyson parent community! THANK YOU SO MUCH for ALL of your time and effort into making this such a fun-filled, Tennyson Tradition!!! If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Ravena Berar and Mandy Hillier at: [email protected]
Many of our planter boxes have been converted into sandboxes (thanks M Carrier and Div 10 students). The students are loving playing in them but we could use some more plastic toys that are in good shape. Flimsy buckets do not last long! Please drop off unbroken items into the sandboxes at the front of the school or into the box in the lobby. Thank you all! The Tennyson PAC have put on many excellent Parent Presentations over the last two years to to keep families informed on current trends, issues, and questions related to our children, their development, and what is happening at Tennyson. Find summaries and useful links from the excellent sessions below.
Topic: Social Media Awareness, Digital Footprints, & Cyberbullying Monday October 1 2018 The parent presentation will focus on all things digital. Your child has now entered into their digital media lives, where cell phone ownership doubles, video game use explodes and they dive into the world of social media and hypertexting. Your child is rapidly developing their personal identity with cell phone in hand and you need to be prepared. Family rules, parental controls and developing a family tech plan will be outlined as well as recommendations for monitoring your teen’s digital life. As a parent, you must lead the charge as a digital role model and help your child develop a strong digital citizenship foundation while reminding them that their digital footprint is a reflection of their real and online selves. At this age, they will encounter situations that will challenge their independence, including cyberbullying (and more commonly – cyberexclusion), the dangers of anonymity, privacy, sharing intimate images, and inappropriate websites, and you need to be there to provide support and guidance during this critical period. Finally, to better equip you for your digital parenting strategy, a snapshot of the current trends and concerning apps will be provided. Truths and Myths about Childhood Nutrition Thursday, March 10 2016 A presentation focusing on the most common childhood nutrition challenges (no, it is not vegetables!) for kids and parents. Among them:

She believes that although not all parents are comfortable talking to their children about sex, all parents can learn to be comfortable. During this open and informational session, parents will come to terms with sexual health, and understand how it fits into the lives of their children at this stage of life. Attendees will discover how to easily overcome embarrassment when talking about sexual health, learn words and concepts that are easy to use, and leave well equipped to clearly answer the questions children ask. The workshop is light hearted, but delivers straight and current facts on how parents and children can work together to promote good sexual decisions for a lifetime. The talk for parents precedes the students presentation. Together, they are an incredibly powerful tool for parents and children. Note that additional information regarding the student sessions with Saleema Noon will be provided in November. Crossreach, a senior centre on West Broadway, is looking for a casual cook. A big thank you to the students of Div 10 and M Carrier for their work in moving sand from our field sand pits so that it can be enjoyed by students in an alternate location. Div 10 is quite industrious, and we appreciate their efforts! The PAC will be sending out an email to ask families who might have extra, non-broken or cracked sand toys such as small shovels and small containers that they no longer use to donate them to the school – there is a box in the foyer for this purpose. |
