Tennyson 2020 Committee is looking for Volunteers!
Did you know that there is a PAC-sponsored committee that liaises with our admin team and staff regarding construction of our new school and grounds? The role of this committee is to work together to solve challenges, to lend a hand when help is needed, and to liaise with the PAC on future spending in regards to the new buildings. Some examples of things that the committee might engage in: helping to create play/social opportunities for students when the footprint of our site is temporarily reduced (eg. help the school to build a bank of art supplies and games, sandboxes etc.), study options for new playgrounds, and discuss with staff options for technology, specialized items, and other “things” for the new building, both at initial occupancy and to establish plans for the future. The school encourages interested parents to contact [email protected] . We appreciate the help and support of our fantastic parents!
Here is some important information from the organizers:
No tents are to be set up near the Marshalling area or the start and finish lines – with thousands of runners these areas are very congested and are now a safety issue. As discussed at the organizational meeting, we will continue to refine our procedures and communication in the marshalling area and start line. The meet organizing committee is tweaking the procedures to address the safety concerns and chaotic energy that is present at the marshalling and starting areas. We will need your assistance to ensure that EVERYONE (runners, staff and parents) are helping us to ensure that everything runs in a smooth, orderly and safe ONLY participants will be permitted in the marshalling area and on the course – please let your parents know that we will not allow them near or at the starting line. All athletes should have run in your zone meets so the athletes should feel comfortable running in a large race. If there are concerns, then maybe the younger athletes can be paired up with a ‘buddy’ and they can run together.
All spectators (adults and children) must watch the races from outside the course boundaries (we have areas roped off for the SAFETY of the runners and the meet officials). We have had minor accidents and close misses when people do not pay attention to the course boundaries - please let’s do our part to ensure that everyone stays off the course. I know we all get excited to see our children/students participate in events like this but our rules are meant for the safety of all students. We would strongly encourage all schools to ask parents/spectators to leave their dogs at home. If this is not possible then, ALL pets must be under control and leashed and away from any course boundaries including marshalling, start and finish lines. No parents in the finish line area – they must wait outside the roped area to collect/congratulate or take photos of their runners. Anyone who has been to previous meets will know that the finish area is a constant wave of runners from the first race to the last. Extra bodies in the area is once again deemed a safety issue. First Aid will be available in the finish area BUT all schools are asked to bring their own first aid kits as well. Please ensure that your students and helpers know where and how to access your first aid supplies. Washroom facilities are available in the park facility on the south side of the lake. Additional porta potties will also be on site near the caretaker’s house. All vehicles should be legally parked in the parking lots or on the streets – at past events, vehicles have been ticketed and/or towed. First race starts at 1:00 pm – subsequent races are every 8 minutes. Times are approximate, spectators should error on side of caution if they are trying to estimate what time their child is running. Please refer to the race order which can be found in the attached document. Have a fantastic and fun race! This year kids can try out voting through our special Kids Vote program! On Saturday, October 13 and Sunday, October 14, children under 18 can go to any advance voting location and vote on three questions printed on special pink Kids Vote ballots.
Just like grown-ups, we encourage kids to read the questions, think about their answers, and plan their votes before they arrive. Visit the City of Vancouver's website for details Dear Families,
The District has asked all school to share this letter to parents regarding water quality in VSB schools. The drinking water at Tennyson is within guideline limits. Please see linked letter. http://go.vsb.bc.ca/schools/tennyson/Publications/18_10Oct05_L_toParents_reLead%20in%20Water_Lord%20Tennyson%20Elementary[1].pdf Have a wonderful weekend, Tennyson Admin Team Registration for Art and Sport Together is ongoing. If you have any questions, please only contact Dianne Sankey, Westside CST Programmer at [email protected]. Please see the Oct 4 Tennyson Newsletter from the school administration.
Note: there is a typo in the part about joining the PAC Exec ... it should say that the time commitment is 5 hours per MONTH not per week. The PAC is looking for parents who would consider being on the Executive in the role of Chair or Co-Chair, and also the role of Secretary. These are all roles that are fun and very meaningful to both the PAC and the school. Please know that there are many current and past Exec members who are there to provide support, as well as some tremendous committees already established. The time commitment may be less than you think, as little at 5 hours a month! Please reach out to the PAC Exec if you are interested. It would mean a lot to us.
The role of the secretary is to take minutes at monthly meetings (meetings are on Monday evenings). The role of the chair is to liaison with school administration and chair the monthly PAC meetings. Neither role takes up too much time ... please consider joining the team this year. Questions? Email: [email protected] Grade 6 student Prudence Dishart (div. 5), will be donating her hair to Wigs for Kids, live on Global BC morning news on Friday, Oct 19 at 6:50am!
She is also raising money for a donation, so if anyone is interested they can find her in the school and donate. Thank you! It must be a Tennyson student trend ... see our previous blog posts: www.lordtennyson.ca/news-blog/tennyson-girls-cut-hair-for-wigs-for-kids www.lordtennyson.ca/news-blog/tennyson-girls-donate-hair-for-cancer-patients www.lordtennyson.ca/news-blog/tennyson-student-cutting-hair-for-cancer-kids The Vancouver Secondary Schools Athletic Association (VSSAA) is once again providing programming activities for students on the October 19th Pro-D Day. The sessions are open to all students in grade 5 – 7. Students will be provided skill development instruction and an opportunity to practice those skills through our clinic games and challenges.
Please visit the VSSAA website which is www.vancouverschoolsports.ca – the Pro-D clinics and camps can be found under the SPECIAL EVENTS TAB on the top of the home page. Under each of the sport headings there is a brief description of the camp. Click on the REGISTER TAB to be taken to then to the online registration section - a family account will need to be created and then add the athlete information to your account prior to registering for the clinic or camp of your choice. I can't lie, it was freezing down at Jericho Beach on Tuesday. Whether they were running fast to keep warm or because of their competitive spirit, the Tennyson Cross Country athletes led the pack in many of the races and brought home lots of place ribbons.
Congratulation to all the runners including the following who got place ribbons:
